FAQs

Is solar power worthwhile in Maine?

We get this question often and the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. All places on Earth receive the same amount of sunshine annually, and our pitched New England roofs account for our high latitude in relation to the sun. Lastly with net metering in place by CMP, Maine is as good a place as any to have a home striving to produce no CO2.

How much energy can solar panels produce?

The amount of energy that solar panels can produce depends on a number of factors, including the size and quality of the panels, the amount of sunlight the panels receive, and the efficiency of the system. We always do our best to meet the aesthetic and power needs of each customer.

What is the lifespan of solar panels?

Generally, solar panels can last for 25-30 years or more with proper maintenance. Lighthouse uses a few trusted manufacturers producing grade A panels. All panels we use carry a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty that we will uphold.

How long does it take to recoup the cost of solar panel installation?

The cost of installing solar panels varies but the price per watt is consistent. Typically the larger the array the lower the overall cost and therefore the quickest pay-back period. We have one of the lowest prices in the state with an average payback of around 6 years. The following 20 years of production are free!

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. The DC electricity is then converted into alternating current (AC) electricity through an inverter and is used to power homes, businesses, and other structures.

How does net metering work? Am I paying for power in the winter?

Central Maine Power has in place a net metering program that allows you to bank all the over production in the high production months like summer, and use them when production is low. It makes it easy to zero out your yearly energy bill even when the solar array is covered in a fresh winters snow.

What is the difference between mono-crystalline and poly-crystalline solar panels?

Mono-crystalline solar panels are made from a single, high-purity silicon crystal and have a uniform appearance. Poly-crystalline solar panels are made from multiple silicon crystals and have a more textured, speckled appearance.

Can I install solar panels myself?

While it is possible to install solar panels yourself, it is generally recommended to hire a professional installer to ensure that the panels are installed correctly and safely. The electrical code book is extremely thorough, and now contains an entire chapter specific to solar installations.

How can I monitor the performance of my solar panels?

All of our systems can be closely monitored by means of an app. You will be able to view real time production of the array, consumption of your house, and even how much power you import from the grid. We are also continually monitoring systems and are alerted when a panel or other electronic component is acting up, and we are quick to come to your house and fix any issues.

How much space do I need to install solar panels?

The amount of space needed to install solar panels depends on the size of the system and the amount of electricity needed. Typically, a 1 kW system requires around 100 square feet of space. Our average install is around 8kW.
